There's nothing like the thrill of a South Africa safari: game drives in the soft morning light, watching a herd of elephant from the deck of your luxurious lodge, the intoxicating scent of the African bush, dining under a star-scattered sky ... but where to go?
For many, a safari in South Africa is synonymous with the Kruger National Park: the country's largest and most diverse game reserve, however, South Africa has many excellent safari regions from the malaria-free Madikwe to the Big 5 reserves of the Eastern Cape.
Choosing where to go largely depends of what you're looking for in your safari holiday, so we've helped to break it down for you.
For a luxury safari in South Africa a private Kruger reserves such as Londolozi or Singita (both in the world-renowned Sabi Sands) is an excellent choice. All these reserves are known for consistently good game viewing; massive, private suites; and top quality guides who drive off-road, giving you the chance to get close to wildlife sightings.
If you want a hassle-free family safari we'd recommend a malaria-free reserve such as the Madikwe, a top big game destination just 1.5 hours' drive from Sun City; the Pilanesberg, beautiful reserve centred round a large hippo- and croc-filled lake; or an Eastern Cape safari.
The Eastern Cape is also a great option for a safari and beach holiday as it's a short drive from the Garden Route. While those looking for a slightly more tropical beach break can fly from Kruger to Mozambique's Bazaruto Archipelago or even add on a couple of days in Mauritius (also a popular choice for a safari and spa holiday).
