One could write tomes about the animal life in South Africa. From aardvarks to zebra and everything in between, South Africa's amazing diversity of animals can't fail to impress.
South Africa is home to the 'Big Five', a term that actually comes from the old hunting days and refers to the five most dangerous trophy species, namely: lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and rhino.
In addition to these, you will see plenty of other big game like giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, kudu and hippo in South Africa's parks and reserves.
South Africa's most popular nature reserve is the Kruger National Park. This enormous reserve has the greatest diversity of animal species of any park in the world due to Its numerous habitats.
The dry winter months are probably the best time for game viewing in Kruger because animals gather around permanent waterholes to drink and the vegetation is not as dense as in the summer months.
There are also numerous private game reserves and wildlife sanctuaries throughout the country. Many of South Africa's game parks, excluding Kruger and those in northern KwaZulu Natal, are in malaria-free areas.
