South Africa, the Rainbow Nation, has only been a democracy since 1994, yet it reflects a nation on the move, remembering the past as well as looking to the future. Despite modern western values taking root, many cultures have kept their beliefs and traditional value systems.
A multi-cultural nation, reflected in the eleven official languages, South Africa's history is nevertheless built on colonialism, tribalism and warfare. A country in crisis during the early 1990s, a Truth and Reconciliation commission was instituted, chaired by Archbishop Desmond Tutu, to allow South Africans to find forgiveness for past atrocities.
Common consensus is that South Africa, despite its many present challenges, has made huge strides in coming to terms with its turbulent past and is claiming its place on the world stage.
