Air travel in South Africa is very easy and accessible as the country is the major hub for air travel to southern Africa with over 40 international airlines flying in to the country. There are 749 runways in South Africa, of which 144 are paved.

South Africa's ten major airports handle more than 33 million departing and arriving passengers and 236 000 aircraft landings from nearly 50 international destinations and connect Africa with all other continents.

There are three major international airports:Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg (OR Tambo International), and each of these cities offers a full range of accommodation to suit all travellers. Johannesburg in particular is a travel hub and you'll find everything from small B&Bs to upmarket, luxurious hotels here.

There are a number of daily, commercial flights linking the major cities of South Africa, and regular flights to some of the smaller destinations such as George and Nelspruit.

South African Airways (SAA) is the major domestic and international carrier, although there are a number of smaller airlines flying between the major domestic destinations.

There are also many private and charter aircrafts criss-crossing the South African skies.
