South Africa is the economic powerhouse of Africa with first world infrastructure and a thriving economy. The road and rail network is well developed and the country is open to investment and development.
Such is the faith in the future of the country it was awarded the rights to host the world's largest sporting event, the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
The positive aspects of South Africa are dampened by social problems such as HIV, poverty and crime. However, there is still a very positive attitude towards the future.
South Africa lies below the Tropic of Capricorn and is bordered in the north by Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique and surrounds Lesotho and Swaziland.
