Public Transport

South Africa has an extensive rail network, connecting most major towns. Booking must be made at least 24 hours in advance. There are a number of upmarket lines and special steam operators that offer a luxurious means of crossing the country. These should be booked through a travel agent.

Long distance coach services also connect most of South Africa. Minibus taxis offer a cheap alternative. Although they are superior by comparison with those in neighbouring countries, they are not very safe and can be uncomfortable.

Airports

There are a number of daily, commercial flights linking the major cities of South Africa, and regular flights to some of the smaller destinations such as George and Nelspruit.

South African Airways (SAA) is the major domestic and international carrier, although there are a number of smaller airlines flying between the major domestic destinations.

There are also many private and charter aircrafts criss-crossing the South African skies.

Roads

Driving in South Africa is easy to adapt to: signposts are in English and driving is on the left on well-maintained roads. Your home driving licence will suffice if it contains your photo, otherwise you should get an International Driving Permit.

To hire a car in South Africa you must have held a valid driver's license for at least five years. The age limits for car rental are a minimum of 23 and a maximum of 70 years of age.

A word of caution: overtaking on the inside is not illegal in South Africa and is fairly common practice. In general, speed limits are 120 km/h (freeways) and 60 km/h (towns and cities).

"This is old-fashioned glamour at its best. Everyone already has their drink and we spend the rest of the morning enjoying ourselves in the lounge while being waiting on as if we are royalty." - Rochelle van der Merwe, 'Blue Train', Go2Africa newsletter, April 2007.
