South Africa is renowned for its scenic beauty, incredible coastline and great safari destinations, but there is far more to the country than just highlights like Cape Town, the Garden Route and Kruger National Park.

Battlefields and Island Prisons

Historians can revel in the abundance of gripping stories on the Zulu War and Anglo-Boer Battlefields. For a historical and adventure filled South African holiday KwaZulu Natal has it all: beaches, big five safari reserves, battlefields, world heritage sites and wetlands.

If you're staying in Cape Town you will want to take a tour of Robben Island - the infamous apartheid island prison that held many of South Africa's famous political leaders including Nelson Mandela.

The Eastern Cape Frontier

South Africa's Eastern Cape has an incredible frontier history. Apart from being a malaria-free big five safari area, the Eastern Cape offers historical safaris into a time of expanding empires and frontier settlers. It's also the land on which, migrating African tribes and colonial frontiersmen collided for the first time in recorded history.

Flower Regions

If its unique flora you are after, don't miss the spectacular carpets of spring flowers in the Northern Cape or the renowned Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens in Cape Town. Places to shop, areas of spectacular natural beauty... the list is long and varied.

World Heritage Sites

South Africa also has a number of World Heritage sites that reflect the diversity and history of the country including the Cape Floral Region, Fossil Hominid Sites of Sterkfontein and Environs, Mapungubwe Cultural Landscape, Robben Island and the Vredefort Dome.
