Apart from malaria in certain areas, travel to South Africa generally poses no medical threat with the greatest health risk to visitors being indulging too much in the the finer things the country has to offer or the African sun which can be a risk if precautions are not taken.
As can be expected in a place where the world's first heart transplant was performed, medical facilities in the major centres are excellent with South African doctors enjoying an international reputation.
Despite South Africa's high crime rate, most visitors on their South Africa holiday come and go without incident. Crime is probably the most serious problem facing the country, but it is localised. Precaution rather than paranoia is the way to remain safe.
