Located at the traveller's crossroads of South Africa, Bloemfontein has offered a well earned rest to many a weary road-tripper. As the largest city in the Free State Province and a focal point for most of the overland transport systems in the country, many travellers end up spending a night or two in Bloemfontein - literally meaning 'flower fountain'.

As you would expect from the judicial capital of a country and home to the highest court in the land, the town buildings are a somewhat surreal mix of Roman, Greek and Renaissance architecture. A walk down President Brand Street in the city centre typifies this hodge-podge of late nineteenth and early twentieth century variations on a number of European styles.

Attractions

There are enough highlights in Bloemfontein to keep travellers happily diverted for a full day or two.

The Oliewenhuis Art Gallery has an impressive collection of South African sculptures and paintings. The gallery is set in the former residence of a number of South African Presidents. The Cape Dutch style manor is set in large and immaculate gardens which stretch out until the push against the surrounding wild bush. Even if art doesn't trickle your paintbrush, the gardens café is tucked between trees and a fountain, making it the perfect place to let a few hours slip away.

Second Avenue in the Westdene suburb has become the major hang out spot, and restaurants and nightspots line the street (the area is also safe to walk around at night). A stroll at the newly developed Waterfront is also perfect for casual exploration, or even just a bite to eat and a movie.

Accommodation is refreshingly cheap in Bloemfontein, as is the food. You may not be blown away, but at least you won't blow your holiday budget before even reaching your destination.

After a day or two in Bloemfontein you'll be more than ready to hit the open road in search of bigger South African adventures. Whether you're driving home or embarking on holiday, Bloemfontein is sure to offer you a brief respite for the road that lies ahead.

Interestingly, the city is the birthplace of J.R Tolkien. Although he left when he was three, a stay at the hobbit Boutique Hotel would convince you otherwise. The charmingly irreverent hotel treats the author as if he were a hometown hero; the hotel is sure to offer a quirky holiday story or two.
