Caledon's skyline is dominated by its enormous wheat silos, in keeping with the town's role as the "capital" of the agricultural Overberg area. The area is well known for its wheat, barley, canola fields, onions and wool. Caledon is also home to the largest malt producer in the Southern Hemisphere.
The town originally grew after Europeans discovered mineral hot springs there in the early 1700s, although the Khoi-Khoi people knew about them long before that.
Today, the hot springs and casino still attract many visitors, as does Caledon's annual wild flower show held every September.
