Cape Agulhas

Cape Agulhas is the southern tip of Africa, it's also the official meeting point of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. For such a momentous landmark, there's very little to commemorate it - except for a simple plaque and that feeling that you may just be standing on the edge of the world.

Cape Agulhas stands in the Cape Agulhas National Park that protects the amazing biodiversity found at the "Cape of Storms” - a name that refers to the treacherous coastline that has resulted in many, many shipwrecks through the ages. About 1km from the tip of the continent stands the red and white, candy striped lighthouse built in 1848. Now a National Monument, it contains a small museum, a cosy tearoom and 71 steps to the best view of this relatively flat area.

The little town of L'Agulhas is Africa's most southern town set around a rocky bay, beyond which you can see whales during season. Apart from a few shops, a pub and a couple of restaurants, it also has some safe tidal pools and great fishing.
