The Cape floral kingdom is a marvel of floral ecology, and one incredible statistic suffices to illustrate why. The Cape Floral Region represents less than one twentieth of Africa's total surface area, but it accounts for more than a fifth of the continent's flora (with some 6,191 species of endemic flora alone).
The Cape Floral Region (CFR) Protected Areas World Heritage Site was declared on these grounds. It actually consists of eight separate areas, including the Cape Peninsula National Park, the Cederberg Wilderness Area, the De Hoop Nature Reserve, and five other zones of great natural diversity and beauty.
Prime among the CFR plants is the kingdom known as fynbos (fine bush), the smallest but most diverse of the six plant kingdoms. Fynbos displays remarkable reproductive strategies, including adaptive responses to fire (without which some fynbos species will actually fail).
