The Bo-Kaap is an area of historic mosques, brightly coloured buildings and spicy scents wafting down cobbled streets. The photo exhibition at the Bo-Kaap museum will give you a feel for the history and tradition of the area.

Then your local guide leads you down some of the more historic streets where you can appreciate the pre-1840 architecture that has resulted in this area being declared a national monument.

Together you visit a local spice shop for ginger, coriander, cardamom, cinnamon, chilli, and all the other ingredients that magnificently combine in a traditional Cape Malay curry. The highlight of the tour is being invited into a family home for a hands-on cooking demonstration.

Discover recipes that have been passed down from generation to generation, while you learn to mix masala, fold samoosas and roll up rotis. The interactive cooking session is great fun and also informative, as your hostess and tells you more about the ways in which food, history and religion are interwoven in the Bo-Kaap culture.

Finally it's time to sit back, relax, and appreciate your handiwork as you dig in to a full-course traditional Malay meal.
