The Cape Peninsula is the rocky, fynbos-covered outcropping that juts 75km into the Atlantic Ocean at the south-western tip of Africa, from the Cape Town city bowl in the north to Cape Point in the south. The peninsula was once an island, but was joined to the mainland when the sea level fell to reveal the Cape Flats.

Several towns and villages lie along the shores of the peninsula, whose mountainous terrain buckles its way to the dramatic cliffs at Cape Point. These towns include Fish Hoek, Kalk Bay and Simonstown on the warmer eastern side, and Kommetjie, Hout Bay and Llandudno on the colder western side. The peninsula is also home to the penguin-filled Boulder's Beach and the gorgeous Cape Point Nature Reserve.

Although Cape Point is sometimes called the meeting point of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, this is incorrect. Officially, the two oceans merge at Cape Agulhas, the southernmost point of Africa, 200km to the southeast.
