With a large, tasty selection of menus dotted around the city, replenishing your energy can be as much fun as expending it.

Eating in Cape Town is a ritual, an experience. What to eat, where to eat it and of course what to wash it down with? Now at last count, who knows or cares how many restaurants there are, but there are plenty, and it's all good...well, most of it is.

When dining in these parts, it's not just the food that's important. With the beauty of the surrounds, it's possible to enjoy the best of both worlds - food with a view.

Some people enjoy their food with excellent wines and will trawl the Cape's various wine routes looking for the perfect combo of good wine, delicious food and perfect location.

Your dining choices range from award-winning restaurants on wine estates to neighbourhood burger joints (often with a tweak of something uniquely Capetonian to offer), and plenty in between. Booking is often recommended.

When it's a beautifully sunny day, and eating indoors is just not an option, take a leaf from the locals' book. This involves packing a picnic basket and a six pack, or bottle or two, and finding a quiet spot with great views so you can watch the sun set.

Clifton Beach is a great sundowner place, but drinking alcohol on the beach is illegal so stick to orange juice. Signal Hill has a few picnic tables at the top and offers superb views of the city, mountains and ocean.

Cape Town's reputation as a fishing village means seafood is on almost every menu. In Kalk Bay you can watch the fishermen offload their catch and buy some fresh for yourself - have the locals clean and cut it for you for a small fee. All in all, you're spoilt for choice for good food in Cape Town, and while some restaurants are pricey there's plenty of good value and very tasty fare available.

Cape Town Food & Drink - wine culture

The sundowner is a well supported African tradition and in Cape Town the setting sun is enough of an excuse for a few drinks, which easily evolve into an early supper. Especially if you find those secret spots offering temptingly low prices. - Cape Town's Winter Secret: Restaurant Specials by Emma Gass
