With the peninsula shaped as it is, there's almost always something barrelling, cooking or heaving somewhere on her ample coastline.

Close to the city Thermopylae, Off The Wall and Rocklands are popular surf spots and Glen Beach, lying between Camps Bay and Clifton, is an established locals' favourite.

Long Beach, near the surfing village of Kommetjie, is another hot spot and, on the False Bay coast, Muizenberg is almost always surfable; it's usually a small wave spot but many surfers learned their trade at the famous Surfer's Corner. You can rent a surfboard (and wetsuit) and get some lessons if you're feeling inspired.

Looking for something a little heavier? Dungeons, a 20 minute boat ride from Hout Bay harbour, pumps out some of the world's biggest ridable waves, scoring the biggest of the year ending 2006 (a 60 footer!). Dunes, around the corner, can be barrel heaven but it's not for beginners and there's a long walk along the beach to get there.
