The Western Cape comprises a total area of 129,370km2, making it roughly the size of Greece.
It's the country's fourth-largest province and home to an estimated 4.7-million people, approximately 3 million of whom live in the greater Cape Town area.
About 55 percent of Capetonians speak Afrikaans at home while 28 percent of the population speak Xhosa and 19 percent English.
Other languages spoken include Sesotho, Zulu and Setswana.
English and Afrikaans are the most widely-understood languages in Cape Town.
Many Capetonians who speak Afrikaans or Xhosa as a first language speak English as a second language.
