Cape Town wildlife may not be what you expect, but there are some creatures to look out for on your Cape Town holiday - and not just the dassies on top of Table Mountain either.
Every year Southern Right whales migrate to the (relatively) warmer waters of the Cape and can sometimes be seen off Cape Town's coast during whale season between June and November each year.
The whales can often be spotted near Simonstown or Kalk Bay - find a restaurant near the water and watch the whales play as you enjoy lunch. However, whale watching on the Whale Coast is some of the best in the world; Hermanus even has an annual Whale Festival.
Even if the whales aren't around, the seals always are (take a boat trip to Seal Island off Hout Bay), and so are the penguins that live at Boulder's Beach.
A little bit further on from Boulder's Beach is Cape Point, a nature reserve with a smattering of antelope, ostriches and the protected chacma baboons.
The baboons on this part of the Cape Peninsula have become very wily through their contact with humans. They have been known to open car doors and steal bags from people's backs in the search for food; so keep your distance.
Cape Town is not really a wildlife destination, but combine your holiday in Cape Town with a safari for the ultimate African holiday experience.
