De Waterkant ('the waterside') residential area is nestled on the slopes of Signal Hill in Cape Town. The area was first settled in the 1700s, when the high tide came right up to the slopes of the hill and lapped the ramparts of the castle in what's now the city bowl.
Much of Cape Town's land is reclaimed, so De Waterkant is no longer on the waterside, but it gazes out over Table Bay and retains its evocative name. It's a travellers' village, with all sorts of accommodation available, from crash pads through apartments to luxury manors.,
The suburb of picturesque old slaves' residences, with its cobbled streets and brightly painted houses, De Waterkant is one of the most vibrant and fashionable addresses available in the city of Cape Town.
