A perfect weekend destination from Cape Town, the Cedarberg mountains are a rugged and arrestingly dramatic mountain range near Clanwilliam in the Western Cape of South Africa. It's also home to one of the Western Cape's best-kept accommodation secrets - Bushmans Kloof. They are named after the endemic tree species Widdringtonia cedarbergensis (Clanwilliam Cedar) and noted for their peculiar rock formations and San rock art. It's a great wilderness area with huge views, amazing Spring flowers (August and September), and rugged hikes.
One of the best walks in the area has its route on Wolfberg (wolf mountain). It begins in the Valley of the Red Gods, which contains some remarkable vertical - and red - rock formations, and proceeds up to the Wolfberg Cracks, a series of jagged crevasses carved out of the sandstone of the Wolfberg. From the top of the cracks you can walk across the plateau to the Wolfberg Arch, a huge arch of rock on the top of the mountain and one of the most remarkable features of the Cedarberg.
The area is very sparsely populated with farmsteads, which punctuate the valleys - ribbons of fertility in an otherwise arid landscape. The notable peaks in the area include Sneeuberg (snow mountain) and Tafelberg (table mountain, not to be confused with Cape Town's Table Mountain).
The Cedarberg area is also a nature reserve (the Cedarberg Wilderness Area) administered by Cape Nature Conservation.
