Between Piketberg and Citrusdal, a mountain road climbs steadily over Piekenierskloof Pass. The view from the top shows a vast, flat valley, green in winter and pure gold from ripening wheat in the spring.
The first explorers crossed this mountain in 1660 to find a lush river valley grazed by hundreds of elephants. They named it Olifants River. On its banks lies the thriving fruit-farming area of Citrusdal where, in spring, the air is redolent with orange blossom from thousands of citrus groves.
Sacks of juicy oranges are sold on the roadside for a handful of change, and the oldest fruit tree in the country has been dated in Citrusdal at over 160 years old. Citrusdal also attracts visitors for its hot mineral baths, and testimonials to the local healing spirits can be seen inscribed on rocks near the springs.
