Dundee has very little to offer travellers except a good base for exploring the surrounding regions, which include the battlefields. Formed in the 1880s when large deposits of coal were discovered nearby, Dundee was a mining town that provided accommodation and facilities for employees of the Dundee Coal and Estate Company.
All but one of the mines have since closed, and the large industries have up and left. Despite its industrial history, however, Dundee remains a pretty town characterised by green lawns, blue gums and historic whitewashed buildings. It has an excellent museum and ample accommodation options in backpackers and B&Bs.
