Ellisras is one of the youngest towns in the Waterberg region, originating in 1960 on the farm Waterkloof. The name is a composition of the two owners of the farm, Patrick Ellis and Piet Erasmus.
Ellisras is in the heart of the bushveld and draws trophy hunters from all over the world due to the rich diversity of game in the area. Game farming and cattle ranching are two of the most important agricultural activities and the principal crops of the area are groundnuts and tobacco.
Ellisras is possibly best known for ISCOR's huge, open-cast colliery, which feeds the largest direct dry-cooled power station in the world. The coal was discovered on the farm Grootgeluk (good luck) during drilling operations for water in the 1920's. The reserves are ludicrously large and it is estimated that at least half the country's coal is found in this neighbourhood.
