- Day 2: Blyde River Canyon Day Trip
- Itinerary
After breakfast, embark on a guided day tour of the Blyde River Canyon. The canyon is one of the most spectacular in Africa with cliffs that rise between 600m-800m from the riverbed. At The Three Rondavels viewpoint (also called The Three Sisters) is an unforgettable view of three huge rock spirals rising out of the far wall of the canyon with hut-like rounded roofs. This is a truly unique landscape.
Pilgrims Rest is a town born during the excitement of an alluvial gold rush. The town is a living museum and has been declared a national monument. It'll take you back to the days of the old Transvaal gold rush. Its history allegedly began in 1837, when Alec Patterson panned for gold in the stream running through the valley. News of Alec's success spread, and he was soon joined by hundreds of other prospectors. Within a year there were 21 stores, 18 canteens, 3 bakeries and all sorts of other establishments.
It's not much of a stretch to imagine what life would have been like back in the 1800s. See if you have the Midas touch and complete your adventure by panning for gold in the stream.
