Landlocked in the middle of South Africa, the Free State province is the traditional home of conservative Afrikanerdom. Its provincial capital is Bloemfontein - the land transport nexus of South Africa, with its art galleries and museums (but not much else to excite visitors). The rich soil and good climate provide for a thriving agricultural industry, and currently there are more than 30 000 farms populating the region. Locals often creatively refer to the Free State as South Africa's bread basket.
The Eastern Highlands of the Free State are a gateway to the small mountain nation of Lesotho, and probably the most geologically spectacular area of the Free State.
The rest of the Free State is almost totally flat farmland, but by no means lacking in beauty. Patchwork fields of yellow maize and pink and purple cosmos roll away for miles under an enormous blue sky.
