Garden Route Birdlife

The unique landscape of the Garden Route, with its lagoons, wetlands and catchments areas, makes this a bird-lover's paradise. Any twitcher worth their binoculars will come and spend a few days in these parts and leave with an impressive list of sightings.

More than 500 species have been recorded in these areas, from waterbirds and warblers to woodpeckers, sugarbirds and the beautiful Knysna Turaco (Lourie). Stick around for a while: that camera will be working overtime and your bird book well used.

The Birds of Eden free-flight sanctuary is a world-class facility where more than 2 000 birds from 180 different species worldwide live in a covered natural arena.

These probably don't count as official bird sightings but you don't need to be a 'birdy' for this to be an unforgettable experience.
