Garden Route » Environment » Overview

In a region famous for its biodiversity and incredible natural surrounds, the encroachment of humans on this beautiful and sensitive terrain was always going to be a problem.

For more than 200 years man wreaked havoc on the area with farmers, woodcutters and hunters almost destroying the region with their excesses.

The early pioneer conservationists managed to bring this under control and allow us to enjoy what remains in this amazing natural arena.

Today, there's once again a fight to maintain the natural beauty of the Garden Route area as developers follow the cash without consideration for the environment and its inhabitants.

With golf courses and luxury estates springing up everywhere and water shortages threatening the region, the battle to preserve what remains of this once pristine area is an ongoing one.
