When is the best time to travel the Garden Route?

The Garden Route is a year-round destination, although the best time for warm sunny weather and minimal rain is from December to February. This is the peak season, however, so during this time Garden Route accommodation rates are at their highest thanks to the great demand.

To avoid the massive influx over South African school holidays but still enjoy the lovely warm weather, November and March to April are your best bet.

July and August are the coldest months (although still mild) on the Garden Route - but they are also peak whale season.

When is the whale season?

The whale season runs from June to November.

Is malaria a risk?

No. The entire Garden Route region is completely malaria-free!

What is the best way to travel the Garden Route?

Self-driving down the Garden Route is recommended (starting in either Cape Town, George or Port Elizabeth).

Garden Route roads are safe and easy to navigate, and each of the lovely towns along the way is only between 45 minutes and three hours drive from the next one. If you book your African self-drive holiday through Go2Africa, we'll prepare detailed directions for you.

What side of the road do cars drive on in South Africa?

The left-hand side.

Will I need an international driver's permit to drive in South Africa?

Yes. You'll need to arrange this in your home country.

What activities can my family do down the Garden Route?

The list of activities that the Garden Route offers is tremendous. The most popular activities include: bungee jumping or bridge swinging at Bloukrans, treetop canopy swinging, quad-biking, visits to the bird, monkey and elephant sanctuaries near Plettenberg Bay, surfing, hiking and boating trips to see whales and dolphins. Of course, swimming at the various amazing beaches and lagoons dotting the Garden Route make this a great family beach holiday destination.

Where and when is the Oyster Festival?

The oyster festival occurs annually in Knysna. The dates change slightly each year but the festival is usually in early July.

What is a car guard?

In most parking areas in South Africa, either in the streets or in designated parking areas, you'll see men (and less frequently women) dressed wearing bright orange, green, or yellow traffic bibs. They're there to watch your car while you go shopping, to the beach or wherever else you're headed.

These individuals are not paid a wage. It's customary to tip them a small amount of money when you return to your car, depending on how long you've been parked there.

What is customary to tip in restaurants?

10 percent is customary and at least 15 percent for excellent service.

How can I be certain that my valuables will be safe where we are staying?

Most hotels and lodges will have safes for your valuables either in your room or at reception.
