Falling within the Cape Floral Kingdom, the Garden Route is rich in fynbos (fynbos is the natural vegetation which occurs along a narrow stretch north and east of Cape Town).

It also contains the largest patches of indigenous forest in the country with giant yellowwood trees and wildflowers a feature of the region. There are also large tracts of commercial plantations of eucalyptus and pine.

In addition, the Garden Route offers a great diversity of other vegetation types as well as several special plants of its own. It's also home to wetlands, catchments areas, natural lakes, lagoons and the impressive Outeniqua Mountains.

This all makes for a spectacularly beautiful but highly sensitive area that conservationists will have to fight hard for over the next century to protect.
