The Free State's largest nature reserve is a combination of the enormous Gariep Dam on the Orange River, and a game sanctuary on its northern shore.

From the dam, some 2000km2 of land are irrigated by means of a tunnel 83.8 kilometres long. Covering roughly 374km2, the dam was opened in 1972 and has long been popular with anglers and boating enthusiasts.

The game reserve accommodates the largest population of springbok in any reserve in the country and also features the cape mountain zebra, klipspringer, black wildebeest, red hartebeest and ostrich. Lovely hot summers contrast with chilly winter nights.
