The Moravian mission station of Genadendal (Valley of Grace) was founded by Moravians way back in 1737 as a base from which to convert the Hottentots to Christianity. The village is clustered around Church Square, whose namesake is imposing and decidedly Germanic in architecture.
Gendandal has an alluring history, which you can discover at the Mission Museum adjacent to Church Square. It's also the start of a 25km trail, for which you'll need to make a reservation, acquire a permit, and get reasonably fit.
Genadendal appears today much as it always has, with rows of white-walled cottages sporting lids of neat black thatch. A visit to this enchanting town is like a delightful step back 150 years in time.
