The railway from Durban to Johannesburg reached this point in 1889. The branch line from Glencoe to the eastern Transvaal was built in 1903. When the new village was built at the railway junction, the village was renamed Glencoe, after a valley in Scotland.
The Glencoe area was an integral part of the first Natal coalfields to be developed around Dundee, as it provided the transport for the coal to reach the factories. The main economic activities in the area are sheep and cattle ranching.
