Hartbeespoort Dam, on the Crocodile River, irrigates 16,000 hectares of intensely cultivated land and provides extensive recreational facilities for Pretoria and Johannesburg.

It has become a bit of a playground for the weary citizens of these cities and is en route to Sun City and the Pilanesberg Game Reserve. There are two holiday resorts on the banks of the dam: Schoemanskloof on the northern bank and Kosmos on the west bank.

The area also sports an elephant sanctuary.

For the history buffs, the dam was completed in 1923 and has an adjoining chain of water canals that extend to an impressive 547 kilometres of irrigation systems.
