The scenery around Kamieskroon is truly rugged, with great granite hills and boulders that form narrow, golden-hued ravines. Only a hardy person can live in this type of terrain.
The bushmen had centuries of practice, which the Dutch settlers lacked. This did not seem to deter them, and in 1864 they settled in a protected ravine between granite outcrops. It soon became clear that this place was unsuitable for expansion so the whole village (church, school, police station, post office and a few stores) all trundled off to the present site of Kamieskroom.
The ruins of the original settlement can still be seen today. They are a curious and ghostly window into the past. The crisp mountain air and the pretty setting of the current town are Kamieskroon's main attractions, as well as the incredible floral banquet in spring.
