Carefully constructed into the coastal dune forest, Thonga Beach Lodge blends into the surrounding environment. Walk through the indigenous milkwood forest to reach the seemingly endless beach, where you can swim in the waves and snorkel at low tide.

To beat the midday heat, take it easy beside the swimming pool or enjoy a relaxed cocktail at the bar. For those needing a little pampering, the lodge also has a rejuvenation spa where you can revitalise body and mind.

Explore the ocean by tracking whales, dolphins and turtles beyond the breakers or go scuba diving offshore. In the evening, toast the sunset over Sibaya Lake which is part of the Greater St Lucia Wetland, teeming with hippos, crocodiles and birdlife.

The dining area - a large thatched 'rondavel' - opens onto an expansive wooden deck, where you can enjoy Maputuland's sultry weather and some wonderful cuisine.

Most meals are served al fresco on the deck, or you can head for the beach and dine by candlelight on the shores of the Indian Ocean. Alternatively, you can enjoy sundowners in the bar lounge or on the cool deck under the Mdoni trees.

The 12 spacious, thatched suites are hidden in the coastal dune forest and raised on wooden stilts to ensure no harm comes to the sensitive dune soils.

Tucked between the old milkwood trees, the rooms exude a rustic, romantic ambience. Bleached wood, glass and natural materials have been used wisely to create an open, airy feel. The en suite rooms all have a private balcony with beautiful sea views.
