A bush walk is a wonderful way to explore the Kruger Park for a few hours. Experienced guides walk you safely through the bush while you daydream about telling your friends back home how you walked through the African bush armed with nothing more than your camera.

Walking through a wilderness area with nothing but a guide and his rifle to protect you is a surprisingly peaceful experience.

Once you get over the fear of being in the wild with nothing to separate you from the animals, your senses relax and begin to tune themselves to the immediate smells, sights, and sounds of the South African wilderness.

It's important to bear in mind that walking guides are not there to walk you into contact with predators or dangerous animals.

The aim of a Kruger National Park walking safari is to help you appreciate nature, and to educate you a little on the fragile ecosystems that make up the Kruger National Park. Spiders, snakes, termites and plants are all explored. You can even track an animal while on foot, examining its dung, and studying its foot prints.

A tracker shows us how to study the ground with an informed eye, and cues us to ask questions. In which direction was the animal walking? Is this the front or the back pad? As we learn to distinguish between a genet, civet, mongoose, jackal and leopard, it becomes addictive and, in a light-hearted sense, rather competitive. - Jane Broughton, 'Kruger Walking Safari', January, 2009.
