The region from the Orpen Gate down is called the Southern Kruger. Home to the famous Sabi Sands Reserve, this region is characterised by excellent game sightings.
The south has the largest lion and rhino populations in the Kruger Park and is also home to most of Kruger's iconic private lodges.
Londolozi, Mala Mala and Singita in the Sabi Sands were the very first private safari lodges in Africa; they are the pioneers of the luxury safari concept.
Another highlight of the southern Kruger region is the Manyeleti Reserve. This area is remarkably different from the rest of the Kruger. The Manyeleti offers long sweeping views, excellent photo opportunities and some of the Kruger's most unique accommodation such as what you will find at Tintswalo Manor House and Honeyguide Mantobeni Tented Safari Camp.
Roughly defined as extending from the Olifants River down to the Manyeleti, the central Kruger is the area in which self-drivers will be able to sight more predators than anywhere else in the park.
The environment and wildlife diversity here is the best of Kruger. This is also the most scenically beautiful area of the Kruger, with wide open yellow savannah, thick green forests and solitary leadwood trees that stand tall and twisted, as if they've tirelessly been guarding the landscape since the beginning of time.
Singita Lebombo - considered one of the best hotels in the world, Singita Lebombo offer the ultimate in service, safari experiences and luxury.
Royal Malewane - This lodge is increasingly frequented by celebrities looking for the ultimate in luxury and privacy. Royal Malewane offers impeccable service, exquisite food, massive suites and thrilling game drives.
From the Phalabora gate upwards, you will find yourself in the Northern Kruger, an area characterised by fewer predators but more spectacular scenery.
The north is the most rugged of the park's regions, and is a must for seekers of solitude, birders, and outdoor enthusiasts wanting to enjoy long walks in pristine wilderness.
A few days sighting animals in the southern Kruger, topped off with a stay at a private lodge in the far north, where you can truly get in touch with the wilderness, is a perfect way to enjoy a well-rounded Kruger safari holiday.
Pafuri Camp - Located in the extreme north bordering Botswana, Pafuri is a luxury tented camp that offers complete seclusion, luxury accommodation and incredible beauty. Make sure to visit the fever tree forest while you're there.
The Kruger National Park forms part of an even greater environmental entity, namely the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park.
This conservation area, also known as a peace park, transcends political borders and links the Kruger with the Gonarezhou National Park in Zimbabwe, and the Limpopo National Park in Mozambique.
The Transfrontier Park is in its early infancy, but extensive tourist facilities are being planned. Fences between Kruger and the Limpopo have already been removed, allowing game to roam freely between the two parks.
