Malaria-free Eastern Cape

South Africa's Eastern Cape has a number of Big Five safari destinations. Although significantly smaller in size than the Kruger Park, the private reserves and national parks of the Eastern Cape offer remarkable game viewing.

If you're planning a holiday with small children, you would be better off going on safari in the Eastern Cape; there are some family friendly Eastern Cape private safari lodges that outclass the Kruger in terms of a family safari holiday.

The Eastern Cape is also a completely malaria free area, so pregnant moms and kids are completely safe.

For people wanting to experience the Big Five, and see all of the other major African mammals, the Eastern Cape Reserves will not leave you disappointed.

The added ability to self-drive and include the Garden Route in your Eastern Cape safari, makes this region an excellent safari and beach destination.

KwaZulu Natal

Thick tropical forests, mountains and valleys, wide open savannah plains and an incredible coastline make South Africa's wild and rugged KwaZulu Natal a fantastic safari destination.

KwaZulu Natal safari highlights include massive white and black rhino populations, big five parks & reserves and excellent cheetah sightings.

A selection of KwaZulu Natal safari lodges offers a large variety of unique eco and nature activities including scenic flights, horse safaris, scuba diving, rhino-darting, frog safaris, tiger fishing and boat cruises.

KwaZulu Natal is perfect for that second-time safari, an experience in which you'll want more than just the usual safari delights.

We Recommend:

Phinda Resource Reserve: The luxury andBeyond lodges that dot the Phinda Reserve all offer an incredible luxury safari experience.

White Elephant: Capturing the elegance & romance of the colonial safari, White Elephant is also a ground breaking eco-activity lodge.

Amakhosi Lodge: Located on the banks of Zululand's Mkuze River in the Amazulu Private Game Reserve, Amakhosi is a strange and wonderful safari lodge; for something completely fun and different make sure to take in a frog safari.

Madikwe

About three hours from Johannesburg, Madikwe is a malaria-free safari destination. The reserve is one of South Africa's largest, and home to the Big Five as well as many other animals.

With an emphasis on being family friendly, this superb safari destination provides excellent children's programmes and is well aware of the needs of a family on holiday.

Day visitors are not allowed and there is no budget accommodation available, so Madikwe offers a secluded and private safari experience.

We Recommend:

Impodimo Game Lodge - Extremely popular with families, with a high rate of return visitors, Impodimo Lodge offers a homely environment without compromising on luxury.

Etali Safari Lodge - A wonderfully romantic getaway, Etali is the best choice for honeymooners and couples looking for luxury in secluded and beautiful surrounds. Etali is one of the few lodges in Madikwe with a spa and gym.

Pilanesberg

The Pilanesberg National Park is undoubtedly the most underrated of Africa's wildlife areas. One of South Africa's best and largest game parks, the Pilanesberg National Park is located in the crater of an extinct volcano and is a malaria-free area.

Created and shaped by volcanic activity over one thousand million years ago, the Pilanesberg is a masterpiece of natural beauty and remarkable landscapes.

Africa's highest concentration of rhino, most of South Africa's mammal species and an incredible number of bird species make this an excellent safari destination. Pilanesberg is also close to Sun City - a casino resort that has been dubbed Africa's Vegas but with waves.

The park is a wildlife photographer's paradise with prolific game and a variety of habitats from wide, soft yellow fields to forested valleys.

We Recommend:

Tshukudu - A fantastic place for couples, Tshukudu is not as expensive as private lodges in the Kruger National Park and Madikwe. This luxury lodge offers an all-inclusive price while maintaining a less commercial appeal than other Pilanesberg accommodation. No children under 12 are allowed.

Bakubung - A fantastic place for kids, with loads of activities and facilities such as swimming pools and trampolines, Bakubung is a good choice. Game drives and lunch are not included in the price, but accommodation is still very reasonably priced.

Ivory Tree Game Lodge - Ivory Tree is perfect for large groups of people. Inexpensive, and good for families, the lodge offers an all-inclusive price. Indulge in food, drinks and a superb safari experience.
