The Kruger may have a wonderful network of tarred roads, but nothing comes close to bumping around at the back of a four-wheel-drive while a private ranger works to track down an elusive predator.
Private game drives get you as close as you could possibly come to a wild animal in complete safety - it's a must for any visitor to the park. Even if you choose to stay in self-catering accommodation, you can still book a private game drive through rest camps in the Kruger National Park.
Our favourite Kruger lodges to enjoy a game drive from:
Tintswalo Main Lodge - Set in the pristine Manyeleti Reserve, a game drive from Tintswalo Lodge offers beautiful scenery and exciting animal sightings. Rangers have the added bonus of being allowed to drive off-road in this reserve.
Mala Mala - The benchmark for wildlife sightings, Mala Mala rangers are fearless and experienced. They will guide you through prides of lion, drive you off-road into herds of elephants, and even park you under a leopard.
Londolozi - Enthusiastic rangers drive you around the Sabi Sands, an area renowned for its wildlife and its Big Five sightings in particular.
The beauty of the Kruger lies in the uniqueness of each experience. Some visitors will be lucky enough to witness a lion kill; others may witness a pair of cheetah stalking unsuspecting impala, or even spot the enigmatic honey badger.
There is a magic at play in the Kruger wilderness, and if you give yourself enough time and find yourself in the right place you may be able to experience a unique encounter.
Guests who want to get as close as possible to animals will want to stay at one of the private lodges in or around the Kruger. Experienced rangers are able to discreetly get you within close proximity of wildlife.
A walking safari in the Kruger is a wonderfully authentic and unpredictable experience. Expert guides walk you through the African bush - keeping an eye out for animals - as they point out interesting reptiles, insects, and vegetation.
Walking safaris usually last a few hours. For the even more adventurous, lodges in the Northern section of the Kruger offer walking safaris that can last a couple of days.
Our favourite spots to do a Kruger walking safari from:
Honeyguide - Honeyguide is perfect for guests just wanting to experience a walking safari as a unique addition to their safari experience. Rangers are extremely professional and knowledgeable, putting you at ease as your feet crunch nervously along the wild terrain.
Pafuri Camp - Walk from the lodge for the day, or choose a three day walking trail. Located in the extreme north, Pafuri is set in the most scenic area of the Kruger Park. This is the absolute best on offer if you want to spend most of your time walking through the Kruger.
The folks at Lion Sands have created an extremely romantic and adventurous experience.
Get driven into the wilderness, and be left in complete solitude (the closest human contact is half an hour away back at the lodge) as you enjoy a night on an open bedroom deck, high up in a tree.
Guests can choose this additional, one-night activity to complement their safari. Dinner is packed for you, and there's no electricity so candles - and the stars - will be your only source of light at night.
Have dinner while watching the sunset over the bush, sleep under a starry night sky, and wake up to an African sunrise.
The most elusive of the big five, these cats are considered the most difficult predator to spot. The Sabi Sands area has the most regular sightings of leopard.
Sit in complete silence as you watch a leopard climb a tree, then perch itself above your vehicle. Nervously raise your camera and take a photo as you pray it doesn't jump onto your lap.
