Here's a list of items we'd prefer you didn't leave behind:
- Remember to bring a camera and binoculars, as well as bird and wildlife reference books.
- Even if you're going to be in the car all the time, bring a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen lotion.
- Bring lots of mosquito repellent as well as anti-histamine and lotion for insect bites. If you are taking anti-malarials, don't forget to bring them too!
- Bring an alarm clock so that you can wake up early to do your game viewing. Early mornings and evenings are the best times to see animals.
- Pack a swimming costume and towel. Most of the Kruger Park rest camps have lovely swimming pools and all of the private lodges do too.
- Books and magazines. In the heat of the day, there is not much else to do but have a siesta, swim and enjoy a good read.
- If you are going in the winter months (May to August), pack a warm jersey and jacket, as the mornings and evenings can be very chilly
- If you self-drive, try to get a car with some elevation; sedans can make game viewing difficult. It's also worth getting an air-conditioned car, especially in summer.
- It's important to remember that if you're catching light plane charters your luggage weight might be restricted to as little as 10kg (20 pounds) per person. It's also advisable to use soft bags that can fit into the small overhead compartments.
