Set along the aloe-studded banks of the Great Fish River, Kwandwe Great Fish River Lodge offers complete privacy, wonderful views and is a great option for honeymooners. Guest areas all have a large fireplace with a massive stone chimney, and a high thatched roof with imposing chandeliers.
Kwandwe is the Xhosa word for 'Place of the Blue Crane' (South Africa's highly endangered national bird) and the reserve is home to a population of these rare birds. The Great Fish River was a hotly contested border during the Frontier Wars of 1779 to 1878 between the Xhosa nation, Dutch farmers and the 1820 Settlers from England. Kwandwe's reception building is a Frontier War-era fortified homestead and the reserve boasts its own intimate chapel.
The reserve lies in the heart of South Africa's malaria-free Eastern Cape and is a victory for far-sighted conservation. 49, 000 acres of farmland in the Great Fish River region were restored and restocked with African wildlife and today thousands of animals including lion, black and white rhino, buffalo and elephant roam this diverse and fascinating reserve.
Situated near Grahamstown, Kwandwe Main Lodge is a natural conclusion to a journey along the world-famous Garden Route. Enjoy a stay here and be treated to game activites lead by fantastic game rangers and trackers.
LocationKwandwe Main Lodge is located in Kwandwe Private Game Reserve in the Eastern Cape, alongside a 30km stretch of the Great Fish River.
DiningSophisticated, glass-fronted sitting and dining areas have expansive viewing decks with great river views.
The food at Kwandwe is fantastic and Pan-African cuisine is served on the private decks, in the candlelit dining room, or enjoyed in the boma (outdoor dining area).
Kwandwe Great Fish River Lodge has 9 suites, each featuring a private plunge pool and spacious, thatched game viewing decks with magnificent views of the wild yet gentle landscape.
The rooms are spread out from each other and the main lodge, so we would not recommend it to those who struggle to walk long distances.
Stylishly furnished in Frontier Settler style, integrating local African culture with colonial settler history, the elegant thatched stone and glass suites feature floor-to-ceiling doors which fold back to reveal uninterrupted wilderness vistas.
