View all KwaZulu Cities and Towns

KwaZulu Natal's top attractions are not so much its cities and towns, as the spaces in between. Most people come to this beautiful province to get away from the noise of urban life, and relax in an incredible stillness interrupted only by the sound of birdsong.

Along KZN's coast, however, there's a long ribbon of seaside towns with a holiday feel. Umhlanga Rocks and Port Shepstone are just two of the family favourites, each with a wide selection of luxurious guesthouses positioned between sugarcane hills and golden sand.

More or less in the centre of this coastline is Durban, South Africa's third largest city. Durbs (as the locals call it) is a vibey metropolis with an international airport, good infrastructure, a fun nightlife, and plenty of wide, sandy beaches to choose from.

Another scattering of towns can be found around the N3, the national highway leading from Durban, through KZN, all the way to Johannesburg. The first of these is Pietermaritzburg, the provincial capital known for its beautifully preserved Victorian buildings.

The small towns of Howick and Mooi River form part of the Midlands Meander. There are dozens of luxurious guesthouses around here, although these are not in the towns themselves, but rather in spectacular settings on horse farms, overlooking lakes, or settled on the foothills of the Drakensberg mountains.
