From Durban the KwaZulu Natal highway stretches in all its smooth concrete glory all the way north to the Swaziland border.

A self-drive exploration of the KwaZulu Natal safari travel region is a relaxed and conveniant way to explore this wild and rugged safari area. Private parks and reserves are all hidden down dirt roads that branch off from the N2 highway.

For a shorter self-drive we recommend flying into Richards Bay. From here Hluluwe-Imfolozi, Phinda, Mkuzi, AmaZulu and the Pongola Reserve are all within a comfortable few hours driving distance away.

As a safari area, KwaZulu Natal is unique in that it has such diverse ecosystems and a rich cultural history; it's an area inhabited as much by the ghosts of bloody battles as wild animals.

KwaZulu Natal has a few select safari parks and reserves that offer unbeatable game viewing. At the Phinda, Hluluwe-Imfolozi and AmaZulu Reserves you can see the Big Five. The entire KZN safari region is particularly good for rhino and cheetah.
