When it comes to safaris in South Africa, KwaZulu Natal is the Cinderella of the ball - an anonymous princess overshadowed by South Africa's more famous royal beauty - the Kruger National Park.
And yet, the area is incredibly rich in varied habitats and, thanks to its raw beauty, is often described as the 'wild-wild west' of South Africa. The major KwaZulu Safari region is northern Natal. Hot and humid with thick rolling jungles, KwaZulu Natal is a diverse area full of long winding beaches, open savannah plains, rolling hills and wetlands.
Big Game
For Big Game experiences, a few reserves offer the opportunity to encounter the Big Five. In major KwaZulu Natal parks and reserves like Phinda, Amazulu and Hluhluwe-Imfolozi, there are buffalo, elephants, rhino and lions aplenty.
Hluhluwe-Imfolozi is home to both black and white rhino, and cheetah sightings don't get better than in the Phinda Reserve - sought-after sightings that even the mighty Kruger Park can't compete with.
The Perfect Second Safari
For anyone that's been on safari to southern Africa before, KwaZulu Natal is the perfect place for that second safari - an experience where you want more than just first-time safari highlights like trumpeting elephants and roaring lions.
Then there are all the safari extras. Activities don't come faster and thicker than in KwaZulu Natal: quad biking, horse-safaris, tiger fishing, scenic flights, scuba-diving, eco-activities ... the list is as long as an elephant's trunk.
Adventure
KwaZulu Natal is also the ideal destination for an adventurous self-drive safari. Drive north from Durban or Richards Bay and explore the major reserves like Hluhluwe, Phinda and Pongola. After your safari, head for the coast and spend some lazy days on the pristine beaches of the KwaZulu Natal Coast.
KZN is also an excellent family safari destination. Safari areas are at a very low risk to malaria and a few lodges have created exciting and unique safari entertainment programmes for kids.
