KwaZulu Natal is a complex patchwork of diverse regions. Travelling round the province gives you the opportunity to take in wild beaches, African bush, mountain peaks, wetlands, rolling hills, historical battlefields, colonial towns and rural Zulu villages.
Northern KZN has a cluster of world-class parks and reserves. This is a wild and beautiful safari area, where days are spent watching rhino, elephant and big cats, while evenings are a time to relax in luxurious lodges, or round the fire in tented safari camps.
A short drive takes you from bushveld and fever trees, to the unspoilt beaches of the Elephant Coast. KZN's coastline stretches some 600 km, from colourful coral reefs and turtle breeding grounds in the St Lucia Marine Reserve, to the developed South Coast - a holiday haven for golfers, and families wanting to while away sunny days on safe swimming beaches.
KwaZulu Natal's central region is as diverse as its coastline. To the west of the game parks are the grasslands, valleys and rocky outcrops where bloody battles where fought between the Zulus, British and Boers. At the battlefields moving tales of courage, victory, defeat and reconciliation are brought to life by passionate and enthusiastic guides.
Further south the landscape softens, and the country lanes of the Midlands Meander wander through horse-studded hills, past restaurants and pottery studios.
Inland of the Midlands, hills give way to the rising peaks of the Drakensberg, South Africa's largest and tallest mountain range, with rocky overhangs protecting thousands of ancient San rock paintings.
