You know when you are in a holiday town - people go to cafés and supermarkets in swimwear, sarongs and bare feet. Langebaan is just such a place.
The warm climate and pleasures of the lagoon were discovered a long time ago, with the original settlement at Oostewal ('eastern shore') dating back to the 1820s.
The town's quaint homes have no mains water or electricity but are still inhabited or used as genuinely rustic holiday homes. Outsiders can never own one of these historic houses, as the families are only allowed to pass them on within the family.
Nonetheless, this young town is spreading rapidly along the shores of the enticing lagoon, which is home to some superb birdlife, and on the surrounding hillsides.
