The Lapalala Wilderness Reserve is a 353 square kilometre wildlife sanctuary in the Waterberg mountains of the Northern Province, about two hours' drive from Johannesburg.

Once you pass through the gates, you're on your own. This huge private game reserve offers an unparalleled bush experience. Animals in the region include black and white rhinos, zebras, blue wildebeests and several antelope species as well as hippos and crocodiles.

The reserve was established in 1985 by the well-known conservationist Clive Walker. With the help of Dale Parker, a sanctuary was created for endangered and rare animals. The pair is credited with reintroducing the critically endangered black rhino to the area.
