"Go to the banks of the great grey-green, greasy Limpopo River" wrote Rudyard Kipling, "all set about with fever trees". This province is one of South Africa's harshest - blisteringly hot in summer (October-March) and teeth-chatteringly cold in winter - but is endowed with an abundance of natural resources.
The northern reaches of the Kruger National Park fall under Limpopo and so do some of the best private wildlife areas.
The Manyeleti Game Reserve is such a place - a private reserve adjacent to the Kruger National Park and home to excellent accommodation. Try the Honeyguide Khoka Moya Safari Lodge or Honeyguide Mantobeni Tented Safari Camp. The reserve's Tintswalo Main Lodge and Tintswalo Manor House are just as good for decadent lodgings in a raw bush environment.
There is superb game and accommodation at Thornybush Private Game Reserve and the legendary Timbavati and the Makuleke Concession in the wild far north of the Kruger offers Pafuri Camp and The Outpost.
