The town of [Nelspruit's] main tourist attraction takes the form of the Lowveld National Botanical Garden. This 1.6 km2 garden is hedged in by the Crocodile and Nels Rivers.
On the Crocodile River's eastern bank, visitors can wonder through a simulated tropical rainforest. In this area of the gardens, a complete ecosystem has been recreated. Some exciting things are happening in this region, and an aerial boardwalk is being constructed allowing visitors to walk four metres high, traversing the canopy of the African Rain Forest.
Cycads, however, are the most significant collection in the Lowveld Garden, occupying a larger area any other plant group. Many consider this the best collection of African and southern African species world-wide. The Gardens are also famous for establishing the world's very first Cycad gene bank. A title which is testament to the vitally important role being played here in the conservation of cycads and other threatened species. Cycads can be found all over the gardens, but they are mostly concentrated around the café area located in the middle of the garden.
From African Rainforest to dry bushveld, the gardens offer a variety of botanical experiences. From May to September there are musical concerts held in the garden. There is also a visitor's centre containing a restaurant, shop and info. centre. Guided tours through the gardens can be reserved, but must be booked at least two weeks in advance
The Garden is open daily from 08h00 to 18h00 but there are slight seasonal variations on operating times. Entrance fees vary, but are always reasonable.
