Lydenburg ('town of suffering') was established by voortrekkers in 1849 and lies at the bottom of Long Tom pass. This pass, named after the artillery gun used by the Afrikaners during the Anglo-Boer War, is one of the most scenically dramatic in the country. It links Sabie on the escarpment with Lydenburg on the Drakensberg plateau.
The area around Lydenburg and neighbouring Dullstroom has many streams and rivers that are well stocked with trout. Fishermen from all over the world come to pit their fly fishing skills against the slippery fish in these famous waters.
